Jurying Services

I enjoy the opportunity to act as Juror for exhibitions and competitions. My criteria for judging artwork goes like this:
1) Nothing should detract from the artist's message. My adage is, "if it doesn't add, it detracts."
2) The work must demonstrate technical mastery.
3) The work must be original. It holds merit if executed from one's own sources, not a copy of another 's photo or artwork.
4) The work must have a professional presentation. It should be clean, neat, appropriately mounted, matted and framed so as not to detract from the artwork.

Here is what a recent exhibition coordinator had to say about my performance as Juror for the Peninsula Arts League Spring 2019 Exhibition.
Hi Melissa,
Thank you so very much for sharing your time and wisdom with us yesterday. Everyone was pleased with and enlightened by your commentary and observations. Each of the award winners and many others requested your written comments, so thank you much for sending this out so quickly. Of course, your own very beautiful work and warm presence rendered your impressions all the more meaningful.
I enjoyed visiting with you, as did everyone else with whom I had had an opportunity to interact. I don't know that we have ever had such a favorable response to any previous juror. We all loved the fact that you had written notes that we would be able to further digest and consider. Your contributions made this event a success.
Gratefully,
Sheila Anderson

Critique Services
I will critique your work and give you guidance and instruction. This is an excellent way for you to improve your work if you don't have the time to take my workshops. Watch the video and read the endorsements below to see what artists are saying about my critiques.
I will critique over the phone, FaceTime, or computer/Zoom, if you provide high quality digital reproductions in advance. My rate is $80/hr. I will charge you for the time we spend on the phone plus one hour for my time while looking at your work and writing up notes for you to keep. Shortly before our phone appointment I will send you my notes for discussion and any reproductions of your work that I have altered in PhotoShop to illustrate my notes. Allot at least 10 minutes per work of art for our phone conversation. Please fill out the Contact Form to request time for a critique. Give me a couple dates and times that work for you.

Phenominal critiques at critique group at the Hillman Collaboratory with Melissa Weinman folks!!!! This is an incredible event for those wishing a truly masterful and professional view of your work. I left with outstanding feedback and direction for making my paintings the best they can be. I mean it. I consider critique sacred ground for an artist. You need trust and to let yourself go into the hands of another vision. And I just have to say Melissa is so caring, so invested and will push your painting to a completely new level. I'm bringing wine next time. So come. You will not be sorry. This is very exciting for the Seattle representational community and for those of us post graduation that still need insights from a master painter.

Yesterday at 10:01am · I'd like to echo Brandy's sentiments about yesterday's critique day ... it was just the kind of gathering that floats my boat ... a substantive discussion about what works and what doesn't in a painting. Thanks to Melissa for her excellent critiques, thanks to all who attended and brought their paintings (some works in progress, some finished, or so they thought), and thanks most of all for your hard work at your easels. What an inspiration!
