The Five Lessons cover
- Aspect drawing: strategies for drawing simple geometric forms in a specific position in space from a specific viewpoint,
- Turning the form: strategies for creating the eight zones of value to turn the geometric form from light into shadow and position it on a surface,
- Atmosphere: strategies in subtractive drawing to create a fully tonal drawing that has space, volume, and atmosphere,
- Grisaille (French meaning grey/gray): expedient drawing method for achieving a fully tonal drawing on grey paper; also, an underpainting method using black and white paint on a toned ground; occasionally a method used to create trompe l’oeil finished work,
- Trois Crayon (French meaning “three crayon”): expedient drawing method for achieving a fully tonal and partially color drawing using black, white and sienna implements on a gray or flesh-toned paper.
