Spring 2019 Classes: Mastering the Essentials

I have mastered the art of traditional realist oil painting and have been training artists for over 30 years. In that time I have condensed that training into super patterns and Mastery Essentials that will turn your painting training from decades into days!   We are going to learn my top four Mastery Essentials.

  • Turning the Form (11-4, Saturday, April 13th), (NOW FULL!  You may ask to be placed on the wait list.) Learn to mix strings of paint for each local color in your painting, tiling, seeing color as light, and creating value and color temperature gradations over every surface in your painting.
  • Cross-contour Brushstrokes (11-4, Saturday, April 27th), Learn to use brushstrokes and follow the surface of the objects you are painting in order to create solid forms.
  • Soft Edges (11-4, Saturday, May 11th), Learn to soften EVERY edge in your painting and how to create an edge hierarchy.
  • Palette Knife Painting (11-4, Saturday, May 25th), (NOW FULL!  You may ask to be placed on the wait list.) Master how and when to use this amazing tool.  I strongly recommend purchasing a good palette knife for this class.  It must have a very flexible blade.  I prefer the Holbein Series A #14.  It retails for about $50.  You can find it on Amazon and at better art stores, like Artisan in Santa Fe.  You can see a picture of the blade in the photo on my Painting Supplies List page.

Choose your own compositions or work from compositions that I have specifically designed to practice these Mastery Essentials.

You may purchase single sessions for $90 each.   Tuition for all  four class sessions is $360.  Classes meet in my Ruston studio (Tacoma) every other Saturday over a period of 8 weeks.   Sessions run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. with short breaks.  Bring your lunch.  Beverages and snacks provided.  I will conduct a short demo and discussion at the beginning of each session.  Space is limited to 10 participants.   Due to high demand, to be in this class you must complete the Spring 2019 Registration Form and submit payment by April 1, 2019.  I will close this class when I have received completed forms and payments from 10 participants, even if it is before April 1.  Use the CONTACT link above to email me questions.
