Spring 2015 Classes

SPRING CLASSES: Study solvent-free oil painting for all levels.  You may purchase single sessions for $90 each, or all five for $400, (a $50 savings).   Classes meet in my Ruston, Washington Studio (near Tacoma) five Saturdays over a period of ten weeks.*  (see note below)  Sessions run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. with short breaks.  Bring your lunch.  Beverages and snacks provided. Space is limited to 8 participants.  I reserve the right to cancel classes with fewer than 4 participants. Read the class descriptions below. April 11, 2015: Edges and Why they Matter ($90)
Six-hour session (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) 
Alla prima painter Richard Schmid says, “Edges are probably the least understood of our tools.”  We’ll paint the still life using a process that invites intentional manipulation of edges.

May 2, 2015: Trompe l’oeil Still Life ($90)
Six-hour session (11 a.m.-5 p.m.)

We will put our planar compositional skills to the test to create a meaningful still life while learning the tricks of trompe l’oeil, literally "trick the eye" painting.

June 13, 2015: Master study—the landscape and atmospheric perspective ($90)
6 hr. session (11 a.m.-5 p.m.)
We will study how the masters created deep space in the landscape through their spatial compositions, mutual intensification of neutralized complements,  and their use             of atmospheric perspective.

April 25, 2015: Composing the still life—Planar Composition ($90)
Six-hour session (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) 
We’ll plan the still life while paying particular attention to mapping out the visual path we want the viewer to take over the surface of the picture plane.

Six-hour session (11 a.m.-5 p.m.)
We’ll plan the still life while paying particular attention to mapping out the visual path we want the viewer to take into the illusory space of the picture plane.

*Please note that the April 25th and May 2nd classes are on consecutive Saturdays, and there are no classes on these consecutive Saturdays: May 9th, 16th, and 23rd (Memorial Day Weekend).
