Conquering Composition is the brainchild of my 40 years of teaching. Composition is the grammar of the visual language of painting and drawing. As with our native language, the grammar in our verbal and written communications is partially learned by experience, but if we really want to be masters of our language we must study. We must understand how the structure of an image and its sensual appeal create experiences that range from the sublime to the horrific.
The visual language is the language of the subconscious mind. As such it has the power to reach deep into our psyches and transform us. This course will cover the basics of visual grammar and then progress to the strategies used by the masters--the poets of painting and drawing!

- Planar composition: how to create the visual path the eye takes over the surface of the picture plane,
- Spatial composition: how to create the visual path the eye takes into the illusory space of the picture plane,
- Sacred geometry in composition: the use of mathematics and proportion to achieve the divine beauty seen in nature.
- Landscape composition: a six-step approach when painting en plein air and have to compose quickly,
- Composing with musical phrasing: how to use dynamics (characterized by constant change, activity or progress) to compose a still life or any subject that is anything but still.
