Composition Workshop (date to be determined, due to COVID-19 mitigation)

How to make decisions about composition: a six step sketch
Composition Intensive

©2022 Melissa Weinman Studio

On an upcoming Saturday, from 10am-2pm.  Bring your lunch.  Light refreshments provided.  Fee: $100

In this upcoming workshop I will teach you the six steps you need to guide you through making a solid composition that clearly conveys your intention.  When you unlock this strategy you will be able to make paintings that are powerful visual statements.

You will bring one or more reference photos for making compositions.  Together we will go through each step and discover how to make the right decisions to get your composition to convey what is important to you.  For each photo we'll sketch out multiple compositions so you will see how each variation creates a totally different visual statement.

These six steps guide you through the process of composing with confidence so that you know what you are going to do before you even pick up a brush!  Stop wasting time on mediocre compositions.  Master these six steps and give yourself every advantage to create a successful painting.

For this workshop you will need photographs you want to turn into painting compositions, a sketchbook with pencils and erasers, and a set of color pencils, markers, gouache, or watercolor.  This workshop is an intensive study.  Come prepared to work hard and practice immediately what you are learning.  Enrollment is limited to six participants so I can work intensively one-on-one with each participant.  You will go home with one or more solid compositions to start painting!

The sequel to this workshop is a plein air experience where we take this strategy to the field and compose on location.
